The Daily Progress, founded on September 14, 1892, by James Hubert Lindsay and his brother Frank Lindsay, has maintained a continuous daily publication schedule.

Originally published six days a week, the first Sunday edition debuted in September 1968. The paper remained under Lindsay family ownership for an impressive span of 78 years. However, on November 30, 1970, the Lindsay family announced their decision to sell the newspaper to the Worrell Newspaper group, marking a significant transition that officially took effect on January 1, 1971.

Eugene Worrell, hailing from Bristol, Virginia, possessed a collection of roughly twenty-four rural weekly newspapers and a handful of dailies, each with smaller circulations compared to the Daily Progress. Following the acquisition, the Progress swiftly became the flagship publication within the Worrell group’s portfolio, prompting the relocation of the newspaper group’s headquarters to Charlottesville.

In 1979, T. Eugene Worrell took steps to restructure his newspaper holdings, leading to the transfer of the Progress and several other papers to his son, Thomas E. Worrell, Jr. This move was accompanied by the relocation of Worrell Newspapers from Charlottesville to Boca Raton, Florida, with the aim of enhancing management practices and expanding the company’s reach, eventually overseeing more than 60 newspapers.

The landscape of the newspaper industry underwent significant changes in 1995, compelling Worrell to divest his newspaper assets.

Richmond-based Media General emerged as the buyer in a notable $230 million deal. Subsequently, Media General underwent its own transformation and was ultimately acquired by Nexstar Media Group. T. Eugene Worrell retained his limited newspaper holdings in Bristol until 1997 when he chose to align with his son, Thomas E. Worrell, Jr., in selling the remaining newspapers overseen by the Worrell family. Media General emerged as the buyer once again, solidifying their influence in the newspaper industry.

As part of a strategic restructuring for the 21st century, Media General changed its business model, including the sale of Progress printers This consolidated, and enabled, the publishing industry produced several newspapers in various publishing houses controlled by Media General.
